Questions

How do I back up and restore my calendar?

Backups live on the Calendars screen. To get there, hold the year at the top of the year view, or open the legend at the bottom and tap Edit calendars.

  1. Back up: under Backup, tap Export backup and choose where to save it in Files. The file is named “Second Backup” with the date.
  2. Restore: tap Restore from backup… and pick the file. Second shows what’s in the backup and asks before it replaces anything.

Restoring replaces everything in Second, on every device signed in to the same iCloud. If you might want what’s there now, export a backup of it first.

A backup holds your calendars, event types and events, including yearlies and when you marked them done. It doesn’t include your settings or your answers to the health questions, so after restoring onto a different Apple Account, set those again in Settings.

How does iCloud sync work?

If you’re signed in to iCloud, Second keeps your calendar in your own private iCloud and syncs it to your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. There’s nothing to set up or sign in to in the app.

  • Changes usually show up on your other devices within a minute or so. Apple decides the exact timing.
  • Second works without a connection. Changes you make offline sync when you’re back online.
  • If you’re not signed in to iCloud, or iCloud is off for Second, your calendar stays only on that device. To check, open the iPhone Settings app, tap your name, then iCloud.
  • On a new device, tap Skip when Second offers setup. Your calendars arrive through iCloud in a minute or so.
I see two of the same calendar. How do I fix it?

This can happen if you ran setup on two devices before iCloud finished syncing. When Second finds calendars or event types with the same name, a Merge duplicates button appears at the top of the Calendars screen.

Tap it on one device only. It keeps one of each, with all their events, and iCloud brings the result to your other devices.

Which widgets are there, and how do I add one?

Home screen:

  • Month (small, medium, large): this month, next month or any month you pick
  • Year (large): the whole year in color
  • Today (small, medium): today and what’s on it
  • This Week (medium, large)
  • Countdown (small) and Countdowns (medium)

Lock screen:

  • Next Up (rectangular): what’s coming next
  • Countdown (circular)

To add one to the home screen, touch and hold an empty spot until the apps jiggle, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and search for Second. For the lock screen, touch and hold the lock screen, tap Customize, choose Lock Screen, then tap the widget area and pick Second.

Where is my data kept?

On your devices and in your own private iCloud. Second has no accounts, analytics, ads or tracking, and Philley Labs can’t see your calendar. The privacy policy has the details.
